Inertial
Inertial is an experimental project investigating the intersection of sound, movement, and SCOBY leather—a living, sustainable material. The project explores the body’s motion as an instrument, using sensor and microphone technology to translate dance into sound. Rather than aiming for a finished work, the focus is on unfolding the potential of both the material and technology through an ongoing investigative process.
Inspired by inertia—the body's tendency to remain in motion or at rest—the project delves into the paradox of being grounded by gravity while constantly transforming. SCOBY leather symbolizes a future of sustainable materials, opening up new artistic and aesthetic possibilities.
Exploration and Method
At the core of Inertial is the development of a choreography that functions as a score, where dancers generate sound through their movement. The project integrates both pre-recorded soundscapes from SCOBY fermentation and live sounds created in real-time. This experimental approach challenges the boundaries between dance, music, and material research.
Residency at Radar
In January 2025, Inertial began with a residency at Radar in Aarhus, marking a key phase in the project’s development. This residency provided a space for experimentation with Radar’s multispeaker setup, the integration of sensor technology in choreography, and the interaction between sound, movement, and material.
The residency served as a testing ground to explore how SCOBY leather can function as both a sonic and choreographic element. While a potential premiere is envisioned for late 2025, the primary focus remains on material exploration and laying a foundation for further artistic development.
Vision
Inertial is a process-driven exploration of the body and materiality within an artistic space. The project aims to create an experimental platform where sound, movement, and sustainable materials converge, inspiring new ways of thinking about art and technology.
